The month of May has a way of holding

both endings and beginnings at the very same time.

As another school year winds down,

classrooms are cleaned out, routines begin to shift,

and milestones both big and small are celebrated.

For graduates, it’s an extra special milestone,

one that marks both the end of a long chapter and the start of a brand-new one.

With graduation season in full swing, many calendars are likely filling up with party invitations. While showing up to celebrate is the main goal, deciding on the right gift can be a challenge. You want to give something the new graduate will actually use as they head off to college or start a new career. That’s why money is always such a popular choice! But instead of just sliding a bill into a standard envelope, why not make the presentation part of the fun?

If you’re looking for a creative way to celebrate a special grad this year,

today’s post shares a few GRAND ways

to turn the gift of cash into a memorable graduation surprise!

As GRANDS and retired kindergarten teachers,

we’ve been to our share of graduation parties over the years!

We both have fond memories of being invited to former students’ celebrations

and being included has always been a treat!

Our resident scrapbooker, Laurie, even has photos to share!

One taken with a former student at her grad party!

(That’s Laurie in the green circle!)

And here’s another…  Goodness, how they grow!

More recently, at the same student’s grad party!

Where do the years go???

Cash is always a standout graduation gift

because it offers the one thing every graduate needs: flexibility

Whether new graduates are heading off to a dorm, furnishing their first apartment, or taking some time to travel, their needs are constantly shifting. Money allows them to cover those unexpected "start-up" costs—like textbooks, groceries, or professional attire—that a specific physical gift might miss. It is also a highly adaptable option that fits any budget, as you can easily vary the amount based on your relationship with the graduate. Whether it’s a larger sum for a close family member or a smaller, thoughtful token for a neighbor or family friend, the gesture is always appreciated.

Beyond the practical benefits, giving cash also empowers the graduate to make their own financial decisions, serving as a small but meaningful first step into the independence of adulthood.

Cash is a gift that is guaranteed to fit, never needs to be returned,

and is always the right color!

While cash is undeniably practical, we’ve got to admit that sometimes it feels a bit impersonal to just hand over an envelope.  That "cold, hard cash" lacks the sentimental touch of a carefully picked gift or a handwritten note.

However, that’s exactly where the presentation comes in!

By putting a little extra effort into how you package the money,

you turn a simple cash gift into a thoughtful surprise.

It shows the graduate that you didn't just stop at the ATM on the way to the party,

but actually took the time to create something special just for them.

Does anyone else remember

receiving or gifting this gift to a new graduate?

The classic roll of quarters was the ultimate "welcome to adulthood" graduation gift. It was a practical rite of passage, specifically designed to prepare a new college student for the reality of dorm life and the endless cycles of laundry that awaited them.

Of course, times have changed, and in today's world, quarters are rarely the currency of the laundry room. With most modern dorms and apartments now using apps, student ID cards, or digital payment systems, that heavy roll of coins has mostly become a piece of nostalgia. However, while the way students pay for laundry has evolved, the need for a little extra "dough" to cover those everyday essentials remains exactly the same. Since we can't just hand over a roll of quarters anymore, we have to get a bit more creative with how we package our support for the next generation.

While a roll of coins might seem small, it represented something much bigger: a thoughtful nod to the independence (and the chores) that come with leaving home. In an era of apps and digital payments, there is still something incredibly nostalgic and charming about the weight of those quarters, reminding us that sometimes the most helpful gifts are the ones that tackle the everyday basics.

Below you'll find a few GRAND ways to bridge the gap

and make your graduation cash gift feel

personal, helpful, and anything but ordinary.

Are you looking for a fun way to present your grad

with a gift of cash?

We’ve got two very simple versions for you here!

#1 - A Grad Cap of Cash!

Laurie filled an empty water bottle with dollar bills,

added a fun grad label

and a Grad Cap and ribbon tassel in school colors to the top!

#2 - A Hidden Gift Jar!

Meanwhile, Laura has hidden her cash gift

inside a mason jar, and then covered the money

with one of the graduate’s favorite treats…

M & M’s, Skittles, jelly beans or Starburst are all fun options.  If you can find a treat that works with the grad’s school colors, all the better!

Simply roll up a wad of cash and secure it with a rubber band.  Place the wad vertically in the mason jar and gently pour the M & M’s into the jar, surrounding the cash.  Screw on the cove and decorate as you’d like.

As an added bonus, don’t be surprised if the jar of candy gets lots of action with friends at the dorm come fall!

Beware!  If you choose a chocolate treat, do not leave your gift in the hot sun!   You don’t want the grad to end up with bills covered in a melted mess!

This gift includes something practical with a bit of a surprise inside!

Laura purchased a compact umbrella,

one that would fit easily into a school backpack.

In addition to the umbrella, we needed string, Scotch tape and cash for the gift. Pretty easy!  We turned the umbrella upside  down and opened it up.  I also cut 6 lengths of string that were 24 - 30 long.  I threaded each length of thread through a metal rib of the umbrella and tied it.  I taped a paper bill to the other end of each string and then closed the umbrella and strapped it together.

When the grad opens the umbrella,

dollar bills will fall and hang, “raining” money everywhere!

I’m not superstitious so I’m keeping my fingers crossed

(LOL!)

that opening the umbrella indoors to show you the hanging money

will bring no bad luck my way!

(It was a very windy day when I tried to take outdoor photos!)

Every new grad needs a box of tissue when heading out on new adventures!

This one comes with some extra special “tissues”!

You’ll need an empty tissue box/container, dollar bills (any amount)

and Scotch tape.

To begin, tape the bills together, end to end.

When done, roll the bills up and put them into the tissue box/container.

Leave one sticking out partially!

Another Option! Years ago, Laurie gave a similar gift to her son. However, she purchased a box similar to this graduation version and she remembers taping several bills together.

The gift was a winner!

Have you seen this Pizza Box $$$ gift idea before?

Well, Laura added a kindergarten twist to the idea

when giving a grad gift to a former student or two!

Instead of using the idea of pizza dough as the basis for our gift,

We're using Play-Doh!

For this idea, I emptied out 2 containers of Play-Doh

and filled them with an assortment of cash ($1’s and a $20)

I put the containers in a small basket I got from Goodwill

and added a ribbon and the card!

Easy Peasy!

Who doesn’t love receiving a gift of chocolates?

No graduate we know, that is!

With this one, though, they’ll get an unexpected surprise

when they open the box!

For this presentation, I took several of the chocolates out of the box,

filled the empty spaces with bills and coins,

closed it back up and added the bow!

Of course, I put the  extra chocolates in a small container…

for Hubby and I to enjoy! 😋

Take it from these two retired kindergarten teachers…

We know a thing or two about making milestones feel magical!

While the kids might be bigger now,

the goal is still the same…

Celebrating our grads with a little extra spark!

Yet, while any gift itself - cash or otherwise -  is appreciated,

the true heart of any graduation gesture

is the personal message you include with it.

In the whirlwind of parties and ceremonies,

a few thoughtful words written from the heart can become

a graduate's most kept treasure.

Whether it’s a shared memory, a bit of hard-earned advice,

a sweet photo from the past

or a simple note reflecting your hopes and dreams for their future,

your words provide the emotional "fuel" that cash alone cannot.

Years after the money has been spent, that heartfelt message still remains

as a reminder that they have a cheering section

standing firmly behind them as they take their next big step.

Graduation season, especially, invites us to pause and reflect…

on how far these young people we love have come,

the memories they’ve made along the way,

and the exciting new chapters waiting just ahead.
