We’re so glad you’re here!
In our last post, one of the recipes we shared
was for our seasonal Dirty Apple Cider Soda.
That recipe reminded us of a recent family trip
that Laurie and family took to Grand View Lodge.
To add a special touch to this annual trip
her daughter-in-law prepped and set-up their very own Dirty Soda Bar!
With fizzy sodas, flavorful syrups, creamy add-ins,
and endless flavor combinations,
this simple setup added a special memory to this year’s gathering!
.After all, everyone loves playing mixologist…
crafting their own custom concoctions
and sampling a few fun creations along the way.
So, whether you’re hosting Littles, grown-ups,
or a mix of both,
a Dirty Soda Bar is a fizzy, fruity and fun way to serve up happy memories!
Just like me,
my daughter-in-law loves to throw a party with a good theme!.
She’d put together a Dirty Soda Bar for a few other celebrations she’s hosted,
so when our extended family headed up to Grand View Lodge this summer,
she brought the fun along with her!
In fact, it was the very first thing to be set up
as soon as we walked into the cabin!
Have you heard of this sweet, viral beverage trend
that’s been taking over social media and fast-food menus alike?
Before we get fully into this blog post,
we thought we’d share a few things we’ve learned about this latest craze!
Dirty sodas are the sweet cousin to a “dirty” martini!
You’ve probably noticed dirty martinis having a moment with their salty, savory splash of olive brine. But on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, dirty sodas are blowing up right alongside them—sweeter, creamier, and unapologetically extra. Think of it as the ultimate mocktail answer to the “dirty” craze, fueled by viral TikTok trends, drive-thru menus, and our collective craving for a fun little treat.
The “dirty” label simply means you’re doctoring up the original formula—in the best way possible! Much like its martini counterpart, half the fun of a dirty soda is attributed to the many ways you can customize your beverage - everyone gets to build their own signature order! The result is a fizzy, velvety, sweet concoction that lands somewhere between a gourmet mocktail and an ice cream float.
As we mentioned, our son and his creative wife got busy once we arrived
at our vacation destination
and they quickly set up our Dirty Soda Bar for the week!
It wasn’t long before our thirsty Littles were mixing up a drink or two
and the grown-ups weren’t far behind!
And, as an added bonus,
our Dirty Soda Bar was set up throughout the week!
These fun insulated tumblers, seen in many of our photos
(on the table behind our Dirty Soda Bar)
were made by my niece using her Cricut back in 2022,
after we got tired of seemingly going through hundreds of glasses every day!
They’ve become a vacation tradition and come along with us every year.
While we’ve removed or altered the names on each tumbler for the photos,
(except for mine, that is)
do you see a common image on each tumbler?
You’re right! It’s a dinosaur!
Dinosaurs are special to our family
and we make it a tradition to include one or more in every gathering!

Setting Up a Dirty Soda Bar!
The fun of a Dirty Soda Bar is
that everyone gets to mix, match and create
their own favorite combination!
You really only need four basic ingredients to get started!
The Base - Soda
The Flavor - Flavored Syrups
The Cream - Creamy Add-Ins
The Garnish - Fruit and Toppings
Don't forget to include plenty of ice, cups, straws, spoons for stirring and a few recipe ideas to get everyone started.
Then let the mixing (and taste-testing!) begin!
Our DIL and our Son D offered a variety of ingredients to get everyone started!
These are the options they provided in each category!
The Soda - Let the Fizz Begin!
For this bubbly foundation, there was a collection of small soda cans of Coke, Fanta, Sprite and Dr. Pepper… And, since the women in our family are BIG Diet Coke fans my DIL also provided large cans of Diet Coke for us! Checkout the V________ Queen Elixir described on the sign highlighted in the next section - it was a favorite dirty soda combination!
Other possibilities might include fruity sodas or root beer as well as lighter possibilities like club soda or sparkling water.
The Syrups - A Little Flavor Magic!
This is where everyone gets creative! Our DIL provided four flavors for us to choose from - raspberry, coconut, cherry and peach! These selections gave us plenty of ways to experiment without needing a dozen bottles!
Other possibilities might include other fruity flavors (like strawberry, mango or lime), sweet ones (vanilla, caramel or mocha), seasonal flavors like pistachio or pumpkin spice or even peppermint.
The Cream - Let’s Make It Creamy!
A little richness makes a big difference! For our Dirt Soda Bar, our DIL brought heavy cream, coconut cream and whipped cream!
Other possibilities could include half-and-half or sweet cream or vanilla coffee creamer. Sweetened condensed milk is another option, but is best used sparingly!
The Garnishes - The Pretty Little Extras!
After all, every fun drink deserves a fun finishing touch! Our garnishes included Maraschino cherries and lemon, lime and orange slices as well as Ruffles potato chips! (Keep reading to learn more about this specific garnish!)
Other possibilities include more fresh fruit options - strawberries, raspberries, blackberries or pineapple chunks - as well as a few extra treats like fresh mint leaves, fruity gummy candies or even rainbow sprinkles for the Littles!
If you're offering lots of different options,
it's helpful (and fun!) to have a sign or a few simple instructions
to help everyone create their own Dirty Soda masterpiece.
And if you really want to make it personal, take a page from DIL’s playbook!
She not only set up our very own Dirty Soda Bar for everyone to enjoy,
but she also gave her drink creations names
inspired by family jokes and traditions!
It was a fun, personal touch that made the whole experience even more memorable!
Let me explain the silliest one…
Rufflegate!
Before our Son-in-Law C joined our family,
Daughter A had a boyfriend who, one weekend during a family gathering,
took the Ruffles Cheddar Cheese Potato Chips off the top of our fridge
and proceeded to open them!
I quickly stopped him and told him they were for a different meal.
He then left the house and went and bought himself the same chips,
returned to our house
and then proceeded to eat them in front of all of us!
That incident comes up all the time in our family
and is fondly known as Rufflegate!
It brings a laugh every time
and the addition of the Ruffles at this year’s Dirty Soda Bar
held a special place of honor, indeed!
You’ll have to use your imagination to guess
what our other family jokes and traditions might be…
Take a look at the names and descriptions of our different dirty soda combinations!
The Littles’ Lemonade was well received during the first few days, but as the week went on, our own Littles became more and more adventurous and started concocting their own creations!
And… if you enjoy a little more kick in your soda,
just add whatever alcohol you would enjoy with the mix.
